LIVING SPACE Cleaning | DIY Solutions | Spring Cleaning Series!

Welcome back to this month’s Spring Cleaning Series! In the previous posts I shared some DIY homemade solutions to deep clean the kitchen and the bathroom. Today, I will share toxic-free solutions for your living space!

Some of these homemade products were already introduced in the blog but because they also cross-over to cleaning the living space, I will mention them again.

If you happen to try out some of these solutions yourself or you make your own cleaning essentials differently, please share!

1. Glass / Mirror Cleaner

If you have any glass or mirror decor items in your home, or need to clean your windows, this a great DIY for it. I already shared the recipe of how to make this with only 2 ingredients of rubbing alcohol and distilled water in the DIY bathroom cleaning post. Be sure to check it out for the required measurements.

I have floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening into my balcony and find this solution to be great for cleaning up any finger prints, dust, etc. The best way to have a streak-free result is to use a dry microfibre cloth. I have also used this on my TV screen and it works just as good!

2. All Purpose Cleaner

If you’ve been following along this series, you would have come to know that my All Purpose Cleaner is a true staple in my household cleaning! I have mentioned this in both of the previous blog posts and it’s worth to include it in this one too. The recipe can be found in the DIY kitchen cleaning post.

I use this to clean all surfaces whether it’s the TV console, tables, chairs, shelves, pretty much everything. It’s a great disinfectant that can clean up the most abrasive mess without using toxic chemicals that release into the air.

3. Carpet Freshener

Carpets can be a dirt magnet if they are not deep cleaned regularly. Routine vacuum sessions are not enough to clean it thoroughly. Most of the carpet cleaners and conditioners found in the market are the same as any other cleaning product – highly toxic and filled with harsh chemicals. Although sometimes it is needed to get rid of any stains on the carpet, I find that this homemade carpet freshener can get you by in keeping out dust and odour.

All you need is some baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and an essential oil of your preference… lavender is quite soothing but if you like a more citrus scent to your home, then I’d suggest sweet orange. There is no real measurement to the baking soda (and of course it depends on the size of your carpet), but take as much as you desire in a cup and add about 6-8 drops of essential oil.

You can then swift the baking soda all over the surface of the carpet and let it sit for 20 minutes. Then, go ahead and vacuum over it! The carpet will be looking and smelling more fresh.

4. Floor Mop Solution

When it comes to mopping the floor, I turn again to Castile soap. I use the Dr. Bronner’s brand because it is Certified Organic so I know that I can trust how it has been sourced, but you can use any brand of Castile soap that is available to you!

The way I use it is by filling up the mop bucket with warm water and adding about 1/2 cup of Castile soap, and I’m good to go. In the rare occasion that something is really stuck to the floor (such as candle wax from my experience), I have to add in about 1/4 cup of store-bought cleaner. But on a regular mop day, the diluted Castile soap gets the job done.

5. Fabric / Room Freshener

Finally, it’s good to find an eco-friendly replacement for Lysol and Fabreeze! It’s actually quite similar to the glass/mirror cleaner because the alcohol ratio kills 90% of germs in fabric or in the air. So to make the freshener, you will need a spray bottle with 70% rubbing alcohol and 30% distilled water, and 5-6 drops of essential oil of your preference.

You can use this on your sofa, chair cushions, pillow cushions, ottomans, and curtains. It’s great to use on all fabric furniture that cannot be washed as regularly as you’d like.

Again, please feel free to share any of your own homemade cleaning solutions – I’m always interested in learning more and changing things up every now and then! Thanks for tuning back in to the blog! The next one will be the last in the Spring Cleaning Series where I will share some hacks, tips and tricks.

Peace & Love ❤
